Kazakhstan Today reported 16,431 domains registered in the .KZ zone in early 2007. PROFIT Online evaluated their number at 25,000 a year later.

Working web sites, however, are considerably less numerous and number only about 1,000. "A great deal of them are registered in the hope to sell them later," PROFIT Online General Director Alexander Vasiliev said. "As far as we know, there is a dozen or so major players in the market that account for nearly 60% domain registration requests."

"They include both cyber-squatters who register the domains with the names that belong to famous international and domestic trademarks and businessmen who want pretty names for their domains," Vasiliev continued. "Once shy about their actual purpose, they no longer bother to be timid. Very many forums and Internet-auctions contain domain sale ads."
