Five years ago, on May 13, 2005 the civilians, attending the protest demonstration, were massacred in Andijan. On May 12, the round table in Moscow on "Uzbekistan: Five years after Andijan", dedicated to Andijan events, turned into discussion of general situation in the region: was the Andijan massacre an accident or logical explosion of steam boiler, where the pressure is increasing while the pot-lid is hermetically closed? What is the reaction to turmoil in Central Asia such as Andijan or Kyrgyz events? What has changed in the relations between the states in the region after Andijan? What is the relation of the world community to Uzbekistan, five years after Andijan massacre? Or have the relations between West and big energy producer restarted again and the massacre is forgotten?

27.04.2010 14:43 msk

In February 2010 28-year old psychologist and the leader of IZIS NGO Maxim Popov was sentenced to 7 years of jail by the Chilanzar district court of Tashkent (Uzbekistan). Paradoxically, this became good news for his friends and colleagues that in the last year have heard nothing about Maxim Popov that has been involved in the campaign against AIDS and drug dependence since 2003. Ferghana.Ru managed to get access to the verdict text and talk to friends and colleagues of Maxim. Technically, Maxim Popov was sentenced for dissemination of educational book about the healthy lifestyle that, allegedly, "undermined the moral values" of Uzbek society, for uncommitted expenses and loss of few t-shirts. He de facto is the victim of wolfish interest of officials to any cash flow, provided by international donors.

In 2007-2008 in the hospitals of Namangan city and Namangan Oblast only 147 children (20 of them in the district hospitals) were treated with HIV/AIDS contaminated medial equipment. The officials still avoid raising this issue. At the same time the government of Uzbekistan puts all efforts in order to "prevent panics" and not disclose vital information. Ferghana.Ru conducted the independent investigation: as a result, we obtained direct evidences of medical crimes 200-2008 that produced mass HIV infections in the Ferghana valley. This government-produced documentary was never shown to wide audience. Although the criminals were punished the problem of medical infection still remains important.
