Protest action in the Uzbek city of Kara-Suu (Qorasuv) under way

Ferghana.Ru correspondents from the Uzbek city of Kara-Suu (Qorasuv) report a rally that amassed over 1,000 protesters in front of the district khokimijat [administration]. The protesters say that a wave of arrests swept the city the day before yesterday and yesterday. One Dilmurod Mamadzhanov, born in 1962, a wrestler, was arrested. The protesters claim that they were told he had died of beating at the police station.

According to unconfirmed reports, 23 people were arrested. There is no way to confirm or denounce the information. The square where the rally is taking place was cordoned off by the police, its servicemen wearing steel helmets and bullet-proof vests. The policemen rank the protesters. There are several coaches with law enforcement agencies parked nearby.

Kara-Suu was in the hands of the locals between May 14 and 18, the day when units of the regular army and the police took over again.
