Census is under way in Uzbekistan. It began in early January as an element of preparations for the forthcoming presidential election. Representatives of mahallja committees [local self-government bodies - Ferghana.Ru news agency] helped by school teachers were put in charge of the census campaign.

These people are supposed to examine the number of residents in every apartment against how many are officially registered there.

The locals say that it happens before every election. The population remains mostly indifferent. Uzbekistan will elect its president come December. Officially, the presidential campaign is not on yet.
